Syllabus:This unit is taught cross institutionally at Edith Cowan University.The unit fosters knowledge and skills in the care and management of material culture collections, especially those in a museum. Blending theoretical and practical applications, it discusses the evolution and uses of collections for scholarly and recreational purposes, to provide a sound professional foundation tor more advanced skills in museology.
 
Unit Outcomes: On completion of this unit students should be able to demonstrate an understanding of key influences which have shaped museums over time and be able to express and articulate view of the roles and functions of museums over time and be able to express andarticulate view of the roles and functions of museums in modern society, express both theoretical and practical understanding of issues pertaining to materials conservation. In addition, they should be able to recognise the key factors of collection deterioration and carry out simple and cost effective measures for preventative conservation of items of different material types, make informed decisions regarding suitable storage of collections within resource constraints, understand the need for museums to pursue their vision and mission within ploicy guidelines and to adhere to directions outlined in their strategic plans.
