Syllabus:Broad understanding of major theoretical debates underpinning social policy process and practice in the Australian context. It pays special attention to the institutional framework of policy making - including the economic, political, cultural and Aboriginal contexts. Drawing from power and decision making theories to inform critically the study of social policy. Economic rationalism, citizenship and 'new' managerialism are covered as part of the current trend in policy debates.
 
Unit Outcomes: On sucessful completion of this unit, students will have- Conveyed knowledge of theoretical frameworks for policy making, as well as drawing on a variety of models used by different stakeholders in the policy process. Expressed an understanding of the interplay between government, community groups and business in policy formation. Explored and demonstrated the emergence of policy communities and networks in policy process and practices. Articulated and examined specific policy case studies, including therole of the government, non-government, and sectors. Explored and revealed their own ideas about how the practical policy processes might be improved from both the top-down and bottom-up perspectives. Developed and critiqued alternate policy processes and practices to an area of interest.
