Syllabus:A survey of the historical development, recent experiences and current issues of Australian social policy, at state and national level. An examination of federalism in the development of social policy. Exploration of the impact of cultural context on thedevelopment of social policies such as income support, health, labour market.
 
Unit Outcomes: On successful completion of this unit, students will have- Knowledge of competing welfare discourses and how these have shaped the Australian welfare state. Knowledge of the ways Australia's colonial roots and federation have influenced the shaping of social policy, including health and income maintenance. The ability to identify how contemporary social trends influence Australian social policy. Developed a critical awareness of the ways in which dominant political and economic discourses impact on contemporary social policy.
