Syllabus:Descriptive statistics, graphical display of univariate data (histogram, stem and leaf, box plot), basic concepts in probability, conditional probability, Bayes rule, discrete and continuous distributions and properties, mean and variance of distributions, introduction to well known probability models - Binomial, Poissson, Geometric, Normal and Exponential, central limit theorem, confidence interval and test hypotheses. Chi-square test for goodness of fit.
 
Unit Outcomes: This unit is designed to provide students with an introduction to useful techniques associated with Probabilistic Modelling and Statistical inferencce as well as providing the necessary basic theoretical framework for studies at more advanced levels. Onsuccessful completion of this unit the student will have an understanding of the fundamental concepts of simple data analysis, probability theory, probability distributions and Statistical inference.
