Area:School of Biomedical Science
Credits:25.0
Contact Hours:8.0
Lecture:1 x 3 Hours Weekly
Individual Study:1 x 5 Hours Weekly
Other Requisite(s):Admission: dependent upon completion of Diploma of Technology, or equivalent at a Singapore Polytechnic.
Syllabus:Purification of molecules, elucidating the 3D structure of molecules, amino and nucleic acid, molecular forces, peptide bonds, protein secondary structrue, protein tertiary structure, graphic visualisation of molecules, protein and nucleic acid folding.

Unit Outcomes: On successful completion of this unit students will have - A theoretical understanding of how to purify proteins to homogeneity. An awareness of the principle methodologies used in the 3D structural determination of macromolecules. An understanding of the principles of protein structure and their interactions and be able to describe the nature of molecular forces involved. An understanding of the key issues relating to the flexibility and folding of macromolecules and the prediction of their structure. Developed the skills to search, retrieve, and interpret data files (pdb) describing macromolecular structure from the data banks. Theoretical understanding of molecular forces involved in protein structure and in modelling protein structure and other macromolecules. Developed the practical skills, and knowledge, to use molecular visualisation programs to view and manipulate macromolecules to highlight their atomic detail and interactions. Demonstrated written communication skills through practical and written assignments or assessments.
