Syllabus:Family structure and function. Family assessment across the lifespan. Mental health issues relating to child birth. Legal and bioethical issues and accountability. Human sexuality and family planning. Reproductive issues. Family resources. WHO standards related to family health. Effects of illness and hospitalisation on families. Family abuse including child abuse, domestic violence and elder abuse. Differences in health needs of men and women. Impact of chronicity, disability and rehabilitation on families.
 
Unit Outcomes: On successful completion of this unit students will have - Demonstrated the ability to apply the theoretical concepts of family nursing. Identified issues that impact on the family. Debated legal and bioethical issues arising in family care. Demonstrated the ability to outline the concept of partnership in care with individuals and families. Explored human sexuality across the life span. Discussed variations in health needs of men and women. Discussed abuse within families and communities.
