Lecture:1 x 2 Hours Weekly
Laboratory:1 x 1 Hours Weekly
Other Requisite(s):TEE Subject Completion: Physics or Physical Science, Applicable Mathematics or equivalent
Syllabus:Computer organisation - survey of components, encoding/decoding, internal and external data transfer. Spreadsheets - data types, entry methods, mathematical operations. Programming - BASIC. Number systems - base 2, 8, 16 arithmetic, decimal conversion. Boolean algebra - basic operation and rules, truth tables, boolean expressions, limited simplification. Gate networks - basic gates, introduction to combinations. LabVIEW programming. Statistics.

Unit Outcomes: On successful completion of this unit students will be able to list the essential components of a personal computer, their purpose and basic interaction. They will have been introduced to spreadsheets and will be able to perform simple operations in data entry and computation and graphics. They will have gained familiarity with the Visual Basic programming environment and will be able to build forms, debugging and flow controls and arrays and files. They will be able to perform calculations using Boolean algebra and understand the operation of the various logic gates. In terms of statistics they will have gained the tools necessary to analyse data, draw meaningful conclusions from the analysis and to present the data in written form.
