Syllabus:Basic information of the Australian health care systems; roles and relationships of medical and allied professional services, the role of the Health Information Manager, uses and value of health information and health records, introduction to law and health law concepts; health care and medical information systems, confidentiality and release of information, patient identification and numbering systems, functions of the health record service. Field trips.
 
Unit Outcomes: On successful completion of this unit, students will have- Demonstrated a knowledge of the Australian health care systems, health care institutions and the role of medical and allied health personnel in providing health care. Demonstrated an ability to access information via the Web. Displayed an understanding of introductory law concepts basic to the use of health information and health records. Displayed a thorough knowledge of the issues pertaining to confidentiality and health information systems. Demonstrated a understanding of the responsibilities of the Health Information Manager in terms of the functions of the Health Information Management Service. An understanding of the purpose and basis of patient identification in health information systems.Gained insight into the role of health information managers and their department by attending field trips to a variety of facilities.
