Syllabus:Introduction to chemical bonding. Shapes and polarity of molecules. States of matter and intermolecular forces. Periodic properties of elements. s-Block and p-Block Chemistry. Properties of gases. Colligative properties of solutions. Thermodynamics and equilibrium. Chemical kinetics. Introduction to organic chemistry - chemistry of the hydrocarbons.s.
 
Unit Outcomes: On successful completion of the unit you will be able to efficiently and accurately perform a range of laboratory procedures, appreciate the need for safe working practices in the laboratory and perform a range of mathematical calculations related to themanipulation and interpretation of data. They will gain sufficient knowledge to predict the shapes of covalent molecules, determine the intermolecular forces between molecules and understand much of the language and terminology used in organic chemistry. They will be able to identify the basic classes of hydrocarbons and be able to predict the common reactions these will undergo, demonstrate an understanding of the laws governing the behaviour of gases, understand thermodynamic terms eg entropy.enthalpy etc and perform calculations using them and they shall deduce rate laws of reactions from initial concentrations of reactants.
