Syllabus:Introduction to power electronic concepts, overview of dc-dc converters. Buck, boost, buck-boost, Cuk converters. Isolated converters, flyback (isolated buck-boost), buck derived forward converter. Half-bridge and full-bridge dc-dc converters. Characteristics of power semiconductors (MOSFET, IGBTs). Gate drive circuits and device protection. Design/choice of high freq. magnetic components. Simulation of power electronic circuits.

Unit Outcomes: On successful completion of this unit the student will gain an understanding of the differences between linear and switching power supplies, of the theory of various dc/dc converter topologies, the characteristics and application of commonly used power semiconductor devices, high frequency inductor and transformer design procedures and be able to apply best practice design principles to power supply systems.
