Syllabus:An interpretation of 19th and 20th Century architectural ideals, principles and theories and an examination of the impact of these concepts on Australian architectural and environmental development. Theoretical approaches to the concept of 'community'. The influence of physical, social, economic and political factors on planning, individuals and land use. 'Modernism' and 'the modern movement'. Issues facing the architect and the profession of architecture in today's world.
 
Unit Outcomes: On successful completion of this unit, students will have- Built an historical framework and broad theoretical understanding of the modern period. Developed and demonstrated research skills through written, drawn and verbal projects. Consolidated knowledge of key twentieth century architects and movements, forming a basis for further study in future culture, research and design units.
Unit Assessment Breakdown: Exam 35%, Research project 30%. Tutorial participation 10%. Tutorial presentation and summary 25%. This is by grade/mark assessment.
