Syllabus:Phase equilibria and simple thermodynamics applicable to geological systems. Two and three component phase diagrams related to igneous and metamorphic petrology. Use of geochemistry and geochemical variation diagrams in petrogenetic modelling. Element classification and behaviour. Eh / pH diagrams and their application to chemical weathering and environmental geochemistry. Geochemistry of ore forming processes. Environmental impacts of mine drainage.

Unit Outcomes: On completion of this unit students will have - The ability to derive predictive and quantative information from a variety of elementary phase diagrams. Become aware of the relative abundances of elements and their behaviour in different regions of the Earths interior, the surface environment, the oceans, atmosphere and the cosmos. They will also have been versed in the use of simple geochemical variation diagrams in evaluating the roles of geological processes.
