11589 (v.2) Physics of Fluids 301

Area:Department of Applied Physics
Credits:12.5
Contact Hours:2.0
Lecture:2 x 1 Hours Weekly
Prerequisite(s):1744 (v.3) Structure of Matter 102 or any previous version
AND
7907 (v.5) Particles and Waves 201 or any previous version
Syllabus:Properties of fluids. Hydrostatics, stress-strain relationships. The basic equations of fluid dynamics - Integral relationships, Differential relationships, including the Navier-Stokes equations. Dimensional Analysis. Inviscid flow - potential flow and rotational flow. Vorticity. Boundary layers and turbulence, Descriptions of turbulence. Complex variables and conformal mapping. Flow over immersed bodies. Geophysical fluids, Boussinesq approximation. Motion in a rotating reference frame

Unit Outcomes: On successful completion of this unit students will have gained knowledge on the mechanics and properties of fluids including the main formalisms that are used when describing the motions of a continuous fluid. They will be able to apply the physics of fluids to representative problems ranging from small scale viscous flows to large-scale geophysical circulations.
