Syllabus:Spread spectrum techniques, direct sequence, frequency hopping, synchronisation and application examples. Characterisation of receiver system, noise figure and intermodulation products. Communication networks and services, multiplexing techniques, circuit switching and modern telephone network, peer-to-peer protocols and data link controls, transfer information across shared media using LANs and wireless networks, packet switching networks, TCP/IP, ATM networks.
 
Unit Outcomes: On successful completion of this unit students will gain an introduction to an advanced digital modulation technique called spread spectrum modulation. Students will also learn how to characterise a receiving system involving noise and intermodulation products and will acquire a basic knowledge of the concepts of network architecture and communication protocol.
