Syllabus:History of cultural heritage management concepts and practices. The social and political construction of heritage values. Nature and culture. Cultural heritage in education and recreation. Conservation ideals and practices. Ethical concerns. Use and patronage. Conservation versus access. Public and private heritage, rights and obligations. Government policy development, legislation and bureaucracy, funding. Communicating cultural heritage values. Cultural heritage in the media today.
 
Unit Outcomes: On successful completion of this unit students will have - Understood how the identification and management of cultural heritage sites embodies and develops the social construction of heritage values. Appreciated current issues relating to cultural heritage management. Recognised the implications of managerial and curatorial functions in preserving and presenting cultural heritage sites. An understanding of the bases of managerial and curatorial practice.
