Syllabus:Laboratory testing of rock samples - uniaxial and triaxial testing, tensile strength, hardness and abrasiveness tests, fracture toughness tests, post failure behaviour, elastic wave velocities. Geotechnical instrumentation in underground and open pit mining - stress and displacement measurements. Monitoring, analysis and prediction of rock mass behaviour.
 
Unit Outcomes: On completion of this unit students will have - Understood laboratory testing of rock samples (uniaxial and triaxial testing, tensile strength, hardness and abrasiveness tests, fractures toughness tests, post failure behaviour, elastic wave velocities). The ability to Apply geotechnical instrumentation in underground and open pit mining (stress and displacement measurements). Monitored, analysed and predicted rock mass behaviour.
