Syllabus:The effect of underground and open pit mining on the environment. Geotechnical problems caused by abandoned mines. Waste rock and tailings management - material behaviour, design of dumps and dams, operation and performance monitoring. Change of water regime on mining areas. Mine subsidence over coal and hard rock underground mines. The effect of abandoned mines on surface stability.
 
Unit Outcomes: On completion of this unit students will have - Understood the effect of underground and open pit mining on the environment. Analysed geotechnical problems caused by abandoned mines. Managed waste rock and tailings. Designed, operated and monitored dumpsand dams. Uderstood the impact of change of water regime on mining areas. Analysed mine subsidence over coal and hard rock underground mines. Understood the effect of abandoned mines on surface stability.
