Syllabus:

Overview of recent developments and emerging issues in the international trade and investment environment. Theories of international trade and economic integration, protection, direct investment and the international relocation of production. Balance of payments and the exchange rate. Institutional and regulatory features of the international economy. The globalisation of competition and the international competitiveness of firms. Risk in international commerce. East Asian economic development. China in the international economy.

Unit Outcomes:

On successful completion of this unit students will have - An understanding of recent trends and current issues in the international business environment. Become familiar with economic issues related to the historical and future development of the East Asian economies. Knowledge of the major theoretical models useful for analysing trade and investment flows in the international economy. An understanding of theoretical and policy issues related to regional economic integration and the multilateral tradingenvironment. An understanding of the key features of the international monetary system. An understanding of the key issues related to the identification and management of foreign exchange risk. Become familiar with developments in the Chinese economy and possible implications for the world economy.
