Syllabus:

The theme of Design in Context 291 is Design History, Production and Consumption. This unit examines a broad range of modernist and post modern design theories and their related contexts. The concepts addressed are investigated through an exploration of both 20th century 'design classics' and the broader fields of popular culture, mass production and consumption as they relate to the development of the design discipline and its practice. Leading fields of design are addressed with examples drawn from graphics, advertising, multimedia, product development, fashion, design photography, art direction and illustration. The unit is intended to give both a sound grounding in 20th century design history and the opportunity to explore how recent ideas and concepts influence current design practice across a wide range of design disciplines.

Unit Outcomes:

On successful completion of this unit, students will have- An understanding of the development of design as a practice and profession in the 20th Century. The ability to call upon modernist and post modern design theories to complement and support designpractice and project development. Enhanced research and analytical skills, with particular regard to 20th century design and contemporary design related sources.

Unit Assessment Breakdown:

Annotated Bibliography 40%, Historic Brief Project and Essay 50%, Research Questionnaire 10%, This is by grade/mark assessment. All assignments must be completed. Attendance of not less than 75% is expected. This is a minimum requirement. The importance of regular attendance and participation in lectures and tutorials is emphasised. A collective pass grade must be attained.
