308098 v.1 Foundation Program (Sarawak Campus) - Commerce and Arts and Engineering and Science Streams


Introduction

The Foundation Studies Program is designed to prepare students with a limited educational background to undertake study at Curtin University (Sarawak and Western Australia). The Commerce and Arts Stream prepares those for undergraduate stduies in business, commerce, media or social sciences. The Engineering and Science Stram prepares those for undergraduate studies in engineering, computer science, life science and physical science.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites

This program is designed for students who have completed at least five years of secondary school education, sat for the Malaysian SPM examination (equivalent to Year 11 or GCE 'O' Level) and obtained credit in five academic subjects including at least C6 in SPM English (IELTS 5.5/TOEFL 520 points equivalence). At application, students are required to consult with the Foundation Studies Program Co-ordinator to determine their eligibility and planned career pathway.

Duration and Availability

This course is of one year full-time study and is available in both semesters.

Course Organisation

Students select either the Commerce and Arts Stream or Engineering and Science Stream depending on the pathway they wish to follow. In the Commerce and Arts Stream students are required to study Academic English and Information Technology units, then a combination of mathematics, business and media units may be selected. In the Engineering and Science Stream students are required to study Academic English, mathematics and information technology units. Then a choice of Physics, chemistry, or human biology units can be taken as options.

Additional Course Expenses

Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other vital study materials. In addition, students may also need to contribute some of the cost of consumables, which varies depending on the area of study.

Special Note

This course will be delivered subject to sufficient numbers and is currently under review. Successful completion of the program will guarantee matriculation to the University but not to any particular course. Entry to courses is a Curtin teaching and school matter and students should be advised of the limitations of some programs.
