304254 v.3 Master of Engineering Science (Renewable Energy Engineering)

MEngSc(Curtin)

Introduction

This course is offered by the Centre for Renewable Energy and Sustainable Technologies Australia (CRESTA). It is designed to provide engineers and scientists with specific training in advanced areas of renewable energy technologies and engineering applications. The emphasis is on the design, analysis, simulation and implementation of energy systems with special attention to renewable energy systems.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites

An honours degree or equivalent in engineering plus a minimum of one years work experience. Students with degrees in other science related areas may also be eligible subject to completing the Masters Qualifying Program. In certain cases, the need to complete these special units may result in an extension of studies beyond the normal length of the course. Students who have also completed the Graduate Diploma in Renewable Energy Engineering are also eligible to enrol.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.

Duration and Availability

This fee paying course is of one year full-time or equivalent part-time study, with intakes in semesters one and two in February and July respectively.

Intermediate Awards

A student who has successfully completed all the requirements of the Graduate Diploma in Renewable Energy Engineering may apply under exceptional circumstance provisions for graduation in that award subject to approval of the Head of School. For further definition refer to the Statement and Awards Section under the General Information Section.

Course Organisation

This course consists of taught units, experimental work over the two semesters and a project leading to a dissertation over the one year period. The project may be pursued at CRESTA or within the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering. The course will provide the theoretical background associated with both renewable and non-renewable energy sources. The course will also provide an in-depth knowledge of major renewable energy technologies - namely wind and photovoltaic. The course consists of a set of core units which are obligatory. Students will have the option to choose from a list of optional units to a maximum of four full units. The semester two optional units may be selected in consultation with the Course Coordinator. Where necessary, the Masters Qualifying Program with a duration of one semester may be required prior to commencement of the course.

Additional Course Expenses

Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other vital study materials. In addition, students may also need to contribute some of the cost of consumables, which varies depending on the area of study.
