Introduction to Structural Engineering - Overview of Structures and roles of analysis and design. Selected Examples. Statics - Principles of statics, forces and equilibrium. Analysis of pin-jointed plane frames. Shear forces and bending moments in beams. Centroid of area and second moment of area of planar shapes. Free body diagrams of systems and frames. Friction in engineering problems. Dynamics - Motion of particles - in a straight line, in a single plane, rotational, constrained motion of connected particles and relative motion. The intersection of forces and motion - free body diagram and its applications and application of Newton's second law. Rigid body motion concepts along a straight line and rotational motion.
