Upon completion of this unit students will have - Developed a broad understanding of the scope of Environmental Geoscience and a basic knowledge to facilitate further studies in this discipline. Used word processing and spreadsheets for data presentation analysis. Developed understanding of databases and their role in storing and retrieving geological data. Employed personal computer associated graphical techniques to display and analyse geological related datasets. Gained understanding of the spatial representation of geological data.

Environmental Geoscience - geological hazards - volcanoes, earthquakes, coastal processes. Mining and rehabilitation, metal and nutrient pollution, environmental effects of mining and energy production, geochemistry and health. Climate change and the global atmosphere - ozone, greenhouse, local air pollution, acid rain. Use of the personal computer, word processors and spreadsheets to report and analyse the data. Fundamentals of databases and their utility and graphical representation of geological data and associated problem solving techniques.
