Detailed structure and function of the bacterial cell. Microbial metabolism, metabolic regulation and biosynthesis of macromolecules. Action of antimicrobial agents. Bacterial genetics, mechanisms of resistance to antimicrobial agents and the spread and epidemiology of antimicrobial resistance. The role of microorganisms in plant and animal diseases. Pathogenesis. The role of microorganisms in the environment, public health and pollution. Commercial applications of microorganisms, particularly in genetic engineering and biotechnology.
