On successful completion of this unit, students will have - An understanding of the social and political implications of the consumerist society. A critical perspective of the social responsibilities of designers. An understanding of ecologically conscious design and universal or inclusive design. Skills in comprehension of written texts.
Theme is the social role of design - It aims to understand the potential contribution of design in bridging the gap between the destructives effects of the consumer culture and the challenges of a sustainable future. It includes an inquiry into anti-corporate activism, an exploration of design related discourses on sustainable development and corporate citizenship, and the principles of eco-design and universal design.
