177299 v.5 Bachelor of Science (Applied Geology)

BSc(Curtin)

Introduction
This course provides a range of opportunities in exploration/applied geology, environmental geology, and hydrogeology/engineering geology. Graduates typically find employment in Australian and overseas industries involved in mineral and petroleum exploration, groundwater exploration, environmental management and energy resource development programs.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites
None. Physics, Chemistry, Applicable Mathematics, Calculus desirable.

Specific Requirements
STAT elements considered are E and V and Q.

Recognition of Prior Learning
Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.

Duration and Availability
The course is of three years full-time duration and is available on a part-time basis.

Course Organisation
The first year of the course is multidisciplinary in approach and involves the study of materials and processes, essential for the development of geological concepts as well as the role of measurement in geology and mapping. The areas of study include crystallography, mineralogy, petrology, palaeontology and structural geology. Relevant aspects of chemistry, physics, mathematics and computing are studied as well as an English unit to improve oral and written communication skills. In subsequent years, processes and results are studied in sedimentology, stratigraphy, historical geology, tectonophysics, geodynamics, petrogenesis, ore genesis and geomorphology. Advanced techniques in geological measurement and mapping include geostatistics, surveying, geology and field geology. Economic and resource aspects of geology are covered in the study of engineering geology, energy resources, marine and environmental geology, hydrogeology, and exploration geochemistry and geophysics. There are two field camps in each of second and third year. The camps in third year are of sixteen days duration and are usually conducted in May and September. There are three third year streams - exploration/applied geology, environmental geology, and hydrogeology/engineering geology.

Professional Recognition
The Australian Institute of Geoscientists, the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and the Geological Society of Australia accept graduates for membership.

Additional Course Expenses
Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other vital study materials. In addition, students may also need to contribute some of the cost of consumables, which varies depending on the area of study. Students are required to pay for their own food while on field camps.
