UNIT REFERENCES, TEXTS, OUTCOMES AND ASSESSMENT DETAILS: The most up-to-date information about unit references, texts and outcomes, will be provided in the unit outline.
Syllabus: Introduction to protein structure: proteins, enzymes, amino acid structure and function, protein structure, functions, properties, isolation techniques, denaturation of proteins, antibody structure and function, enzyme functions, mechanisms of actions, kinetics, clinical and industrial applications. Metabolism: intermediary metabolism, Energy requirements, glucose metabolism, glycolysis, gluconeogenesis and Krebs Cycle, ETS and chemiosmosis. Lipids. Structure and function of lipids, metabolism and structure of cholesterol. Lipoproteins, biochemical control of lipid levels and functions. Nitrogen metabolism, blood glucose uptake and role in diabetes, co-factors and coenzymes, vitamin functions, water soluble and lipid soluble, antioxidants and oxidative damage, functions of glutathione, micronutrients, minerals and elements. Principles of pharmacology, basis of drug-receptor interactions, receptors including G protein coupled. Biology of Nitric oxide and iron absorption, storage and overload diseases, disease markers, pH balance.
