Syllabus: Introduction to Particle Processes. Properties and Sampling of Particulate Solids. Nanoparticles and Nanotechnology: nanoporous materials; synthesis of nanomaterials; characteristics of nanomaterials; applications of nanomaterials. The Motion of Particles: fundamental physical processes; particle-particle interactions; particle packing; particles in fluids, fixed beds and fluidized beds. Particle Characterisation: particle adhesion and crystallisation; particle size measurement and analysis. Catalysts and Heterogeneous Catalysis. Particle Handling and Processing: mixing of particles, particle agglomeration / granulation and coagulation processes; froth flotation; particle modelling in particulate processes. Environment and Safety: comminution and environmental considerations; dust explosion hazard assessment and control.
