Syllabus: This unit focuses on the theories, research, and practical applications of special supportive services in early childhood settings, specifically with children from birth to age 5. Topics covered include program modification and accommodation strategies to facilitate the development of cognitive, motor, social, emotional, and language skills in infants, toddlers, and young children with established or suspected learning impairments. Specific emphasis is placed on developing individualized learning and behaviour management plans, collaborative teaching strategies, understanding the planning process as it relates to early childhood and methods for working with professionals in the field as well as the families of children demonstrating aberrant patterns of development. This unit applies and integrates all of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers.
