B-EDCC v.1 Bachelor of Education Conversion Course

BEd(Curtin) OR BEd(Hons)(Curtin)

Course CRICOS Code: 006087F
Registered full-time Duration: 4 Years

Course Overview

Bachelor Degrees prepare students to develop broad and coherent knowledge and skills in a discipline for professional work and further learning corresponding to AQF level 7 qualifications.

This course provides opportunities for educators to deepen and broaden their professional knowledge and skills and to upgrade their qualifications to degree status. The course is suitable for educators across a wide range of fields: early childhood, primary and secondary education, vocational education and training and development, higher and professional education, supervisors, coordinators, administrators, teacher's aides and Aboriginal and Islander education officers.

Additional Course Expenses

Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks and other essential study materials. Under certain circumstances employing authorities might offer student support with course expenses. It is also recommended that rural and remote students have access to a computer.

Course Entry and Completion Details

Applicants for a Bachelor Degree are required to meet University academic and English language entry standards; details are provided at http://futurestudents.curtin.edu.au and include flexible entry pathways. Any specific course entry and completion requirements must also be met.

This course is open only to qualified educators (including teachers or other educational and training personnel). Admission typically requires a three-year Bachelor of Arts (Education) or equivalent. Applicants with significant work experience who have completed a Certificate IV or approved qualifications will be considered on the basis of alternative entry procedures for mature age students. Literacy and numeracy skills are an important prerequisite to teaching and students are required to demonstrate competence, however, additional support will be provided to speakers of English as a second language. STAT is not accepted for entry to this course.

Credit for Recognised Learning

Applications for credit towards a course are assessed on an individual basis. Credit reduces the amount of learning required to complete the course and may be granted for formal education qualifications, non-formal learning from non-award programs of study and informal learning through work experiences. Further information can be found at http://futurestudents.curtin.edu.au.

Credit may be awarded for prior teaching experience. In awarding credit for recognised learning attention is given to formal teaching qualifications, although in special cases some credit may be given for other qualifications. No credit is given for length of teaching experience. Credit for recognised learning of three, two and a half and two years is determined at the time of admission and is based on consideration of the applicant's qualifications at the time. Credit for previously completed units may be transferred to this course provided that the units have not been used towards an already completed award or can be shown to be surplus to the requirements of that award, and are acceptable within the course structure. The maximum credit for recognised learning which may be offered to any student is three years, so that a complete final year of study is required as the minimum for course completion.

Pathway to Further Study

Graduates with a Bachelor Degree may qualify for entry to some Graduate Certificates, Graduate Diplomas and Master by Coursework degrees. Graduates with a Bachelor Degree with Honours may also qualify for entry to a Master or Doctorate by Research. For further details, see the University website http://curtin.edu.au.

Course Entry/Completion Note

Successful applicants will be required to submit a recent Police Clearance and Working with Children Check at enrolment time. Applicants with overseas teaching qualifications who wish to teach in Western Australia must have their qualifications assessed by the Human Resources Branch of the Department of Education and Training, Western Australia. The letter of assessment must accompany the application for entry to the course.

Course Organisation

Bachelor Degrees typically contain a series of units which may include compulsory (core), optional or elective units to cater for student preferences. They may contain a range of majors, streams and/or minors for students to choose from to pursue learning in a specialised area of study.

The Department of Education has developed a number of learning pathways for students within this course. Each student is required at admission and enrolment to negotiate with the course coordinator to ensure an appropriate mix of units is selected based on experience and prior qualifications.
