Course Overview

This course provides students with an introduction to the language and skills necessary for studying in an academic English environment. The overall aim of this intensive course is to develop understanding and production of language as it is used in academic English through interactive classroom activities. English for Academic Purposes has two levels: EAP1 and EAP2. The course is a component of the ELICOS program offered by Curtin English. An overall grade of ‘B’ or higher will provide a pathway to the English Language Bridging course or Curtin College. A graduate of this course can: 1. Write academic style essays with appropriate grammatical structures and language 2. Identify main ideas, details and writer’s purpose in academic texts 3. Understand academic lectures including listening for gist, details and inferences 4. Use reading and listening passages as a basis for critical thinking 5. Develop note-taking skills which assist with comprehension of academic reading and listening material 6. Engage in discussion on academic topics using conversational strategies 7. Give presentations related to academic topics.



Course Entry and Completion Details

Entry in to English for Academic Purposes 1 (EAP 1) requires the successful completion of Curtin English GE 5 or for external students an entry score of IELTS (Overall 5.0) or equivalent. Entry in to English for Academic Purposes 2 (EAP 2) requires the successful completion of Curtin English EAP 1 or for external students an entry score of IELTS (Overall 5.5) or equivalent. All students are required to buy a course book, and may be required to buy a language learners dictionary.


Credit for Recognised Learning

Applications for Credit for Recognised Learning are not considered within this course.



Course Organisation

This course is offered at two levels: English for Academic Purposes 1 (Intermediate) and English for Academic Purposes 2 (Upper-intermediate).



Duration and Availability

Each level of this course comprises 200 classroom hours plus an additional 120 self-study hours scheduled over a 10 week period.
