Course Overview

Master Degrees (Coursework) prepare students to apply advanced knowledge for professional practice, scholarship and further learning corresponding to AQF level 9 qualifications.


This course provides graduates with detailed knowledge and understanding of core areas of mining engineering, followed by an in-depth exposure to theory and practice in one of two major options: 1. Mine Planning and Management 2. Mine Geotechnical The course and majors are suitable for those who wish to gain specialist knowledge in mining engineering and for graduates currently working within the mining industry who wish to significantly upgrade their knowedge with a view to furthering their careers in this field.

Course Entry and Completion Details

Applicants for a Master Degree (Coursework) are required to meet University academic and English language entry standards; details are provided at http://futurestudents.curtin.edu.au. Subject to the duration of the course applicants usually require a Bachelor Degree or equivalent (and may require relevant work experience), Bachelor Honours Degree, Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma. Any specific course entry and completion requirements must also be met.


Specifically, applicants require a minimum entry of a three-year Australian recognised degree in mining engineering or closely related discipline with a credit (65 percent) average or above in the final year. Applicants with other qualifications and experience may only be admitted with the consent of the appropriate senior academic.


Credit for Recognised Learning

Applications for credit towards a course are assessed on an individual basis. Credit reduces the amount of learning required to complete the course and may be granted for formal education qualifications, non-formal learning from non-award programs of study and informal learning through work experiences. Applicants holding a Graduate Diploma in Mining (Curtin) or a Bachelor of Engineering (Mining Engineering) will be allowed entry directly into the Major. Credits for applicants with other qualifications will be assessed on a case-by-case basis at the discretion of the Postgraduate Course Coordinator.


Intermediate Awards

A student who has successfully completed the requirements of an approved intermediate award may apply for graduation in that award subject to approval of Head of School/Department. Fees apply. Intermediate awards approved for this course:

Course Organisation

Master Degrees (Coursework) contain a series of units in a specialised area of study which may include compulsory (core), optional or elective units to cater for student preferences. They may also contain a range of majors/streams for students to choose from.


Master degrees (by coursework) contain a series of general introductory units in Year 1, followed by the election of a major in Year 2 as outlined in the Course Overview (Specific), in a specialised area of study which include compulsory (core) and optiional units to cater for student preferences.The course is delivered in the form of lectures, tutorials, together with supervised reading and practical work. Students are required to complete a project unit in consultation with academic staff. Project unit may involve both field and laboratory work and all will require the submission of a reasearch dissertation. This course is two years full-time or equivalent part-time study. Registered full-time duration for International Onshore Students on student visa: 2 years


Course Learning Outcomes

A graduate of this course can:

1. apply scientific, engineering ,technological and management principles to mine development, plan and manage mining projects or mine geotechnical engineering projects extending the knowledge base through research

2. think critically and creatively to generate innovative solutions and apply logical and rational processes to analyse mine design, operational planning and management systems and processes or mine geotechnical design and develop suitable engineering processes and solutions

3. access, evaluate and synthesise mine planning and design or geotechnical engineering information from multiple sources

4. communicate in ways appropriate to the discipline of mining engineering, using the written word and oral presentations

5. apply information technologies and mining software tools to generate engineered solutions to mining and design problems and continuum and discontinuum modelling/software tools to generate engineered solutions to geotechnical design problems

6. demonstrate responsibility and self-learning and team-skills by applying critical reflection, evaluation and proactive managing and working in teams

7. identify the constraints and impacts of mine design and management decisions and geotechnical systems in the global environment and identify and apply local and best practice ethical and regulatory standards to design and management processes

8. demonstrate respect for cultural diversity in professional life and in the implementation of projects in a culturally diverse environment

9. work in accordance with professional standards and demonstrate responsibility towards the broader community.


Duration and Availability

This course is one year full-time or equivalent part-time study. The course can be studied externally. Candidates who have completed a mining-related undergraduate degree or who have minerals industry experience may be considered for mid-year entry.
