Visualisation Technology refers to the innovative use of images and interactive technology in a range of applications such as spatial “mapping” and surveying, architecture, engineering, commerce, gaming, media and communication, art, geography and security, health and education. Virtual and augmented experiences, multi-touch interfaces, mobile device views and social networks mean users can see, explore and share relationships, experiences and insights in new ways. This major is designed to provide students with the skills and insights to be able to use these technologies and devices in their future professions or creative practice, either as a single major or in association with another discipline area.


Career Opportunities

Almost all career opportunities now engage with visualisation technologies to some extent, so this major is a valuable addition to studies in any discipline.


Major Overview Note

Students choosing this major within the Bachelor of Arts degree will also choose another major or an elective stream. Choosing a second major allows students to study in an additional discipline area. Choosing an elective stream allows students to undertake further study in the discipline of their first major or choose from a variety of units from around the University.

Major/Stream Learning Outcomes

A graduate of this course can:

1. explain critical theories relating to visualisation technologies and other forms of multi-dimensional representation; understand and apply them appropriately across disciplines

2. apply critical thinking and creative approaches to respond to challenges and resolve issues in the visualisation of various forms of data an information and in their own discipline area

3. access, evaluate and synthesise appropriate information from both technological and discipline sources in order to realise effective visualisation and/or communication outcomes

4. reference visualisation technologies to discipline requirements in order to communicate ideas to a range of audiences across a variety of media and purposes

5. utilise visualisation technologies and apply them strategically to create effective multi-dimensional image-based materials

6. apply learning strategies to build on skills and understandings in order to adapt to continually changing discipline needs and technology

7. recognise the significance of global practice and application of visualisation technologies and be able to apply international standards and practices in their discipline practice

8. value the cultural and intercultural nature of digitally-based visualisation technologies and media and represent this knowledge at a personal and professional level

9. demonstrate professional behaviour and standards and work collaboratively to apply them in all aspects of developing and applying image-based activities to discipline requirements
