MDDU-JAPAN v.1 Japanese Double Degree Major (BA/BCom)


Major/Stream Overview

Completion of this double degree major will provide students with the ability to communicate in Japanese culture. The focus of the major is the Japanese language. The major also provides an insight into the social frameworks, political structures and religions of Japanese culture. To successfully complete this major, students are required to complete four core units, four elective units, and eight Japanese language units. Students commence with JAPN1000 Beginning Japanese, JAPN2001 Pre-Intermediate Japanese, JAPN3000 Intermediate Japanese, or JAPN3002 Advanced Japanese depending on their communicative ability using all skills, and after consultation with the Japanese teaching staff.

A graduate of this course can:

1. apply knowledge of applied linguistics and intercultural communication

2. critically analyse various issues in the context of cultural and linguistic differences

3. locate and extract information from various sources and synthesise information using a target language

4. communicate both orally and in writing effectively in a target language with cultural understanding

5. use electronic sources in a target language to effectively collect information and communicate

6. demonstrate an ability in self-directed learning

7. evaluate and analyse issues arising in the region with in-depth knowledge of a target language and culture

8. demonstrate an understanding of cultural practices and differences in different languages

9. apply an ethical approach in professional practices; work independently and in teams with an intercultural understanding
