This masters program will allow candidates to refine their knowledge in the field of environmental sciences, by focussing on the understanding of ecological principles leading to the preservation of biodiversity and sustainability. A special emphasis is placed in environmental management, including available tools for evaluation of ecosystem rehabilitation and restoration. The candidates will develop professional skills in environmental degradation caused by anthropogenic activities. A research project in a selected field of environmental biology and management is an important component of the program.

A graduate of this course can:

1. apply knowledge of environmental biology and management to a wide variety of situations from urban ecosystems management to planning of large scale impact assessments and post-activity land rehabilitation

2. apply critical thinking and problem-solving skills to undertake large scale impact assessments, post-activity land rehabilitation and manage urban ecosystems

3. access, evaluate and apply current literature, theories and practices of environmental biology and management; design and implement experiments, analyse and interpret data and report research outcomes

4. use a range of methods to effectively communicate to a range of audiences; present and defend scientific findings

5. use established and emerging technologies in the field of environmental biology; competently use information technology and a variety of tools to retrieve, manipulate, transform and present data and information.

6. recognise the limitations of scientific knowledge and skills; continue self-education and training and take control of their own learning and development

7. consider the impact of global diversity and international perspectives on the discipline of environmental biology and the practice of environmental management

8. consider the importance of cultural diversity and individual human rights and how these impact on environmental management

9. work professionally and ethically both as an independent scientist and within teams, either as a professional leader or a collaborator
