This major combines scientific, technical and administration expertise in Health Information management. In addition, staff have strong links with the local, national and international health and information professions, ensuring students have extensive hands-on experience throughout their studies. The Health Information Manager is the bridge between the clinical, management and systems aspects of health and is a fulfilling profession responsible for the collection, storage, analysis and distribution of health care information. The unique competencies of Health Information Management ensure excellent career opportunities both within Australia and internationally.

Major/Stream Learning Outcomes

A graduate of this course can:

1. apply health information management principles and practices to enhance the delivery and management of health care and associated systems; demonstrate a sound knowledge base of the health information management sector and how knowledge and practice may be integrated into the healthcare sector

2. critically analyse issues of belief, empirical truth and logic in health information management; interpret common types of statistical information, generalisations and reasoning in the field of health information management; recommend quality improvement in health information management practice based on evaluation of information

3. access, evaluate and synthesise relevant information to develop competencies in health information management and sustainable health information management systems

4. effectively exchange with internal and external stakeholders such as staff, clinicians, senior personnel and external agencies using oral and written communication skills; effectively facilitate meetings to negotiate health delivery and health system outcomes. Utilise virtual communication technologies effectively to achieve a team outcome

5. effectively use new technologies and information management systems relevant to the health information management profession; use computer hardware and software appropriate to any health care setting; use relevant technologies to interact with health care teams to ensure delivery of confidential, safe and effective care

6. take responsibility for own learning and continuing professional development in the health information management field

7. compare and contrast ways of practicing health information management in different countries; evaluate the impact of individual actions or practices from an international or global perspective

8. demonstrate understanding and respect for individual human rights and cultural diversity; work effectively with people from different cultures to achieve an outcome

9. work professionally and ethically across a range of health care settings; demonstrate understanding of workplace environment and working relationships, dynamics and inter-dependencies such as people, processes and technology; demonstrate initiative and leadership in making decisions in the workplace; demonstrate the ability to work independently or as part of a team
