Introduction

The MTech is a Master's degree program for engineers working full time in the oil and gas industry. In order to graduate students must attend some units delivered by Curtin - approved industry - affiliated training providers. Students can only apply for admission to this course and enrolments in its units through the Department of Petroleum Engineering at Curtin University. The program is offered through two streams of study. The Shell MTech stream is offered in partnership with Shell International Exploration and Production (SIEP) and is only available to Shell engineers and scientists. The PetroSkills MTech stream is offered in partnership with PetroSkilla LLC, a global training provider for the oil and gas industry, and is available to engineers and scientists working full - time in the oil and gas industry. The program is designed to provide specific training in business principles and petroleum related technologies in Geosciences, Petroleum Engineering, Well Engineering, Production Prrinciples, Process Control and Instrumentation, Fiels Engineering, and Maintenance and Integrity. The emphasis is for students from a specific discipline to broadening their knowledge in other areas of the Petroleum Engineering business.

Course Entry Requirements/ Prerequisites

Applicants should have an honours degree or equivalent qualification. However, students with a pass degree plus a minimum of one year's experience and who are currently working full - time in the oil and gas industry will be eligible for entry to the MTech program. Applicants for the Shell MTech stream, must be Shell sponsored. Applicants for the PetroSkills MTech stream can self - sponser their completion of the program.

Duration and Availability

Admission to the MTech is available throughout the year. This fee paying course is available part - time and will usually take two to four years for completion. Shell MTech students undertake coursework and assessment at Shell Learning Centres operated worldwide. PetroSkills MTech students will attend Curtin - accredited PetroSkills courses offered at various locations worldwide. The associated online Curtin University course assessments will be offered at least once per academic year.

Course Organisation

Shell MTech students who are sponsored to attend courses will be given time release from their normal duties to attend each of the units within the study program. The delivery of units will be by workplace learning supported by online instruction, usually culminating in face - to- place workshops. Some units are taught in block teaching mode. Upon admission, Shell MTech students are provided a defined set of units for their route to graduation, as per their Shell discipline career paths. Optional units may be available to Shell MTech students & can include accredited PetroSkills courses. PetroSkills MTech students will attend PetroSkills courses in block teaching mode, & then enrol with Curtin University to complete the associated assessment through Curtin University online learnig platform. Students are required to complete workplace based projects. PetroSkills MTech emphasises workplace learning through the use of workplace focused assessments & projects. The program offers students a flexible study plan to suit the individual's skills & competancy requirements & chosen career path progression. Students will undertake 100 credits of workplace - based projects & will select six to eight accredited PetroSkills technical courses (100 credits) to graduate.

Professional Recognition

Curtin's undergraduate engineering degrees are accredited by the relevant professional institutions which includes consideration of the postgraduate courses and research activities within a department. The School of Engineering postgraduate degree programs (including the MTech), are recognised by the relevant institutions as providing a component of the required professional training leading to Chartered Engineer or Professional Engineer status.

Contact hours indicated reflect that units are taught in an intensive block format. The MTech is an industry partnership program designed specifically for individuals working full time in the oil and gas industry.
