Overview of Aborigines in contemporary Australian society. Historical background to the present. Displacement, depopulation, cultural survival and revitalisation, adaptation and change. Issues and controversies. Aboriginality. Emerging forms of identity. Identity and political mobilisation. Aboriginal studies - growth, influence, methodological foundations, trends and developments.
