Introduction to Design - broad issues of design, design approach, problem solving, types of loads and load factors, limit states. Steel - Codes of practice, roofs, tension members, compression members, axially loaded columns, columns, simple roof trusses. Complex connections and splices, plate girders, base plates. Timber - design stresses, beams, axially loaded solid columns, spaced columns, tension members, members in combined bending and direct stresses, plyweb beams, glued laminated members, joints and connectors.
