Introduction to the scientific method, experimental, quasi-experimental, descriptive, qualitative and epidemiological research. Measurement issues - questionnaire development, reliability and validity of data, issues of sampling and sample size. Ethics in research. Biostatistics, descriptive statistics, probability distributions, concepts of hypotheses testing, estimation and confidence intervals, t tests and on-way ANOVA, crosstabulations and chi-square tests, correlation and sample size calculations. Use of SPSS statistical software in order to create, edit and analyse research data. Illustrations of research conducted in a range of health professions.
