Chemistry of selected functional groups and of aromatic, heteroaromatic and aliphatic compounds of pharmaceutical importance including terpenes, carbohydrates, and steroids. Stereoisomerism and drug structure. pH and pKa applied to ionisable groups in drug action and biological systems. Concepts of partitioning and hydrophobic bonding. Drug receptor interactions, proteolipid membrane systems as a locus of drug activity and receptor characterisation. Quality variations in pharmaceutical products and detection of poor quality.
