Molecular biology of prokaryotes and eukaryotes. Molecular basis of disease. Recombinant DNA technology in medicine - cloning, sequencing and synthesis, gene probes as diagnostic reagents and DNA fingerprinting, polymerase chain reaction in clinical diagnostics, human pharmaceuticals - microbes, protein engineering, designer drugs, recombinant vaccines. Transgenics and gene therapy, social and legal aspects. This unit consists of five topics which examine techniques used in Biotechnology. The five topicsare: Enzymes, vectors and applications; Southern blotting and applications; Polymerase chain reaction and applications; Genetic libraries, construction, use and identification of clones including sequencing; Use of radioactive substances.
