Literacy is the ability to use language to operate within one's society. The current focus on improving students' literacy standards in schools means that teachers require a reasonable grounding in functional and critical English skills to ensure that they are confident and competent to teach in primary schools. Undertaken by those who feel they are not sufficiently competent in their control and understanding of English required for teaching in a primary school setting and may be a requirement upon failure of the initial English competency test.
