Introduction to the many layers of refugee health and illness. Illness from the refugee experience and morbidity as a consequence of re-settlement, acute disease and chronic problems. Definition of a refugee and the related legal and political implications. Health risks of refugees include malnutrition, intestinal parasites, Hepatitis B, Tuberculosis, low immunisation rate, dental caries, malaria, STIs including HIV infection, diarrhoeal illnesses and mental health including long-term effects of war and trauma experience and displacement, rape and torture.
