303079 v.2 Bachelor of Science (Physiotherapy)

BSc(Curtin) OR BSc(Hons)(Curtin)

Introduction

This course provides the learning experiences to gain the knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviours expected of an entry level physiotherapist. It has a hybrid structure using curriculum based learning to efficiently learn foundation knowledge together with case studies and clinical practice to integrate knowledge into clinical decision making. It also emphasises evidence-based practice and encourages students in critical thinking.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites

At least one TEE science subject. Physics desirable.

Specific Requirements

Applicants for this course should refer to the Communicable Diseases and Criminal Record Screening/Clearance Section of this publication. Students are required to have swimming qualifications to Bronze Medallion standard, or equivalent, before commencing the second year of the course. A first aid qualification (Senior First Aid Certificate or equivalent) is also required before entry to second year. All applicants, who are NOT currently classed as a 'School Leaver' or currently completing Year 12 TEE in WA, must complete a Personal Information Form. This includes students undertaking Year 12 studies outside WA and students undertaking a mature age TEE. Applicants who do not submit this required form will not be considered. The STAT is not accepted for entry to this course.

Note

The personal information form is available from the School of Physiotherapy. Potential honours students refer to Admission into Honours Degree Programs and Regulations for Honours Degrees in the General Information section of the Curtin Courses Handbook.

Duration and Availability

The course is four years full-time study. It is not available on a part-time basis.

Course Organisation

Prospective applicants are advised that the program requires full participation in laboratory classes where manual skills, including the ability to lift and support severely disabled patients independently, and topics such as surface anatomy are presented. Essential learning strategies demand that all students disrobe appropriately, have the ability to participate fully and are willing to act as subjects for their peer group and as mock patients for other students.

Professional Recognition

The Physiotherapists Act of the State of Western Australia requires that all practising physiotherapists must be registered with the Physiotherapists Registration Board of Western Australia. This course is accredited by the Australian Council of Physiotherapy Regulating Authorities and is recognised by the Physiotherapists Registration Board of Western Australia and the Australian Physiotherapy Association. Under the terms of mutual recognition, registration in all Australian States is available and in New Zealand under the terms of Trans Tasman Recognition. Graduates applying for licensure in the USA, UK or Canada will be required to provide details of their program of studies to the relevant bodies and sit a licensing examination.

Additional Course Expenses

Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other vital study materials. In addition, students may also need to contribute some of the cost of consumables, which varies depending on the area of study. In addition to the usual course expenses, students undertaking this course will be required to purchase a laboratory coat and an approved clinical uniform.
