MPetEng(Curtin)

Introduction

This course is comprehensive in nature and provides multidisciplinary education and hands-on training in petroleum engineering. Candidates completing the course successfully are expected to work as fully qualified petroleum engineers requiring minimum supervision in the upstream oil and gas industry. The teaching staff in the Department are professionals with many years of working experience in the oil and gas industry. The course is structured around a modular approach and each module takes one month of intensive lectures and application training on actual oil and gas field examples.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites

A recognised degree in engineering and certain science subjects.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.

Duration and Availability

This fee paying course is of three semesters full-time duration, but may be completed over one year or equivalent part-time. Progress is subject to the availability and sequencing of units within the course.

Intermediate Awards

A student who has successfully completed all the requirements of the 'Postgraduate Diploma in Petroleum Engineering' may apply under exceptional circumstance provisions for graduation in that award subject to approval of the Head of School/Department. Course Organisation

The course is organised on a block modular format with almost fifty per cent of the time spent on applications of the knowledge using real oil and gas field data. Depending upon academic background, work experience and career aspirations, candidates may choose a range of modules from an extensive unit list offered by various disciplines and acknowledged lecturers from other educational institutions and industry worldwide. Unit selection shall be under the guidance of and subject to approval by the Course Coordinator.

Additional Course Expenses

Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other vital study materials. In addition, students may also need to contribute some of the cost of consumables, which varies depending on the area of study.

Special Note

For latest advances in technology, students will have access to the Society of Petroleum Engineers' (SPE) reference library on CDROM, updated yearly with latest publications, as well as the SPE online eLibrary.
