Introduction

This research course provides the opportunity for students to develop research and analytical skills and specialised knowledge in a field of public health and apply these to one of the many areas of interests in either an applied or research application.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites

Either an honours degree in a related Public Health, Health Sciences or one of several Postgraduate Diplomas offered by the School or Division of Health Sciences. Degrees that are equivalent from other recognised tertiary education institutions are also accepted. There is a further requirement that applicants must demonstrate evidence of high performance (course weighted average of 70 per cent) combined with a background in research methodology. Applicants without this requirement may be required to enrol in additional units as bridging units.

Duration and Availability

This research course is of two years full-time duration, but applicants with a postgraduate diploma, relevant honours degree or equivalent qualifications and experience may be eligible for direct entry to the second year of the course. Part-time study isalso available.

Course Organisation

This course is studied as a research degree. The content of the degree should be determined in consultation with the Postgraduate Coordinator, School of Public Health. Students without prior studies in research methods and statistical data analysis will be required to undertake relevant preparatory units. This will increase the stated course duration.

Additional Course Expenses

Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other vital study materials. In addition, students may also need to contribute some of the cost of consumables, which varies depending on the area of study.

Special Note

It is a requirement that two-thirds of this course is undertaken by research and only one-third by coursework. Students should not enrol in this research course to receive the related Postgraduate Diploma but rather have undertaken it as a requisite for admission.
