Introduction

Information and communication technologies are increasingly reshaping global business and many facets of human endeavour. With technological advances specialist expertise in areas such as communication networks, mobile radio communications and digital signal processing are increasingly required in the telecommunications industry. The masters program provides a solid foundation for Telecommunications and Networking and develops specialist knowledge and expertise in areas of current and future importance.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites

Admission to the program is available to candidates who have high academic performance in a four year degree program in a relevant branch of engineering, science or computer science. Relevant professional experience is required for candidates who graduated more than five years ago. It is expected that students entering the Masters in Telecommunications and Networking program are proficient in - Continuous signal and system theory, probability theory, continuous wave modulation and demodulation, pulse amplitude modulation and communication systems, consistent with the treatment given in Chapters 2-8 of A.Bruce Carlson, P. B. Crilly and J.C. Rutledge 'Communications Systems: An Introduction to Signals and Noise in Electrical Communication', McGraw Hill, 2002. Discrete time signal and system theory, sampling, Z transform theory, discrete time Fourier transform theory, discrete Fourier series theory, discrete Fourier transform theory, IIR and FIR systems and filters, consistent with the treatment given in chapters 2-8 of A.V. Oppenheim and R.W. Schafer, 'Discrete Time Signal Processing', Prentice Hall, 1998. Spoken and written English. Students must be competent at technical writing consistent with the ability to submit a Masters project report.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.

Duration and Availability

This fee paying course is one year full-time study or equivalent part-time study. Part-time progression is subject to availability and sequencing of units within the program.

Additional Course Expenses

Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other vital study materials. In addition, students may also need to contribute some of the cost of consumables, which varies depending on the area of study.
