184807 v.3 Graduate Diploma in Communication and Cultural Studies

GradDipCCS(Curtin)

Introduction

This course provides basic training to those desiring a career shift and/or the necessary prerequisites for honours or postgraduate diploma study in one of the School's majors - Australian Folklife, Australian and Intercultural Studies, Creative Writing, Cultural Studies, Literary Studies, Performance Studies, Professional Writing and Presentation. Students are expected to achieve a level of competence and performance superior to that of the typical undergraduate student.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites

An approved bachelors (or higher) degree or equivalent in a discipline other than English, or a Bachelor of Arts course in English (or higher) in an area different from the stream in which study is proposed.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.

Duration and Availability

This fee paying course is of one year full-time duration or equivalent part-time. It should be noted that work in some areas, especially performance studies, requires substantial attendance on campus, often in daytime. It cannot be guaranteed that evening classes are available. If bridging work in basic prerequisite units is required the course duration will increase.

Course Organisation

Majors available complement the School's Bachelor of Arts program - Australian and Intercultural Studies, Creative Writing, Cultural Studies, Performance Studies, Professional Writing and Presentation, Publishing Practice and Literary Studies. Graduate Diploma units 510 - 515 are usually similar to undergraduate units and sometimes honours units taken at a graduate diploma level. Some bridging work may be required prior to entry into the course. Students consult with the Course Coordinator to prepare an individual program of study.

Additional Course Expenses

Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other vital study materials. In addition, students may also need to contribute some of the cost of consumables, which varies depending on the area of study.
