This unit focuses on the role of 'play' on, in and via the internet, in various forms including desktop and mobile play. This will include examination of the role of large-scale gaming systems (such as massively multiplayer games and gameworlds), console games, social and casual gaming (such the mobile revolution led by offerings Angry Birds and Farmville), through to ''gamification' (the application of game mechanics to achieve other outcomes, such as playing for commerce, e-learning, etc), and broader spaces and types of play online. The regional and national specificities of gameplay will also be explored, including a focus on gameplay in Asia and Korea in particular. |
